The town of Vail, Colorado, in Eagle
County, was established in 1966. It is at the base of Vail Ski Resort,
which opened in 1962. It is famous for its skiing and other winter
sports, in addition to being a year round destination for outdoor
activities. The average elevation in the town of Vail is 8150 feet
and it is surrounded by the White River National Forest.
Vail, Colorado
Vail Mountain is at an elevation of 11,570' and has
over 5,000 skiable acres, numerous ski lifts, and almost 200 marked
ski trails. There are three faces, the Front Side, the Back Bowls
and Blue Sky Basin. The seven back bowls are Sun Down Bowl, Sun
Up Bowl, Teacup Bowl, China Bowl, Siberia Bowl, Inner Mongolia Bowl,
and Outer Mongolia Bowl.
Modeled after European ski towns, Vail has many parts
of town that are walking only. It has the largest zero-fare shuttle
bus system in the USA and Gore Creek, a tributary of the Eagle River,
flows from east to west through the center of the town.
